Lessons from the Inner Voice: The Times I Didn’t Listen (And What I Learned)

Hi everyone,

Tom here. If you’ve watched my videos like ‘Walking Daily with the Higher Source’ or ‘How to Hear Your Inner Voice,’ you know I talk a lot about that quiet, constant guidance inside us—the Higher Source that’s always with us, trying to lead, protect, and provide.

Today I want to share something more personal: it took me a long time to really trust that voice. Not because it wasn’t speaking… but because I didn’t always listen. The biggest lessons came from the times I missed it. Looking back now, those moments weren’t punishments—they were gentle teachers. Let me tell you three stories from my life that changed how I listen.

Story 1: The Childhood Squirrel

When I was just a kid, I saw a squirrel in the yard and decided to throw a rock at it. I wasn’t trying to hurt it badly—just being a boy with a rock. But when the rock hit, something strange happened: I felt the pain right in my own side, sharp and real, like it was my body that got hit. I didn’t know it then, but that was my first taste of true empathy—and maybe the inner voice speaking through my body, saying, ‘This hurts another living thing, so it hurts you too.’ That moment stuck with me. It wasn’t about guilt; it was about connection. We’re all linked under the same higher hand, and harming one ripples back.

Story 2: The Navy Slot Machine

Fast forward to when I was in the Navy. Money was tight, so I headed to the Enlisted Men’s Club to try my luck on the slot machines. I was playing one when I felt a clear pull—a nudge—to move to the machine right next to it. It was strong, like an inner ‘go there.’ But I thought, ‘Just one more pull on this one.’ I stayed. A girl walked up, put her coins in the machine I was drawn to, and bam—$50 jackpot right away. I watched it happen. That miss taught me: the guidance isn’t always about big spiritual things. Sometimes it’s practical—provision, a little help when you need it. Ignoring it didn’t ruin my life, but it showed me what could have been. The higher hand was trying to bless me, and I stepped aside.

Story 3: The Rainy Drive and Guardrail

Then there was the time I was driving back to base after visiting family. It was raining hard. I shifted the automatic transmission into second gear for better control on the wet road. As I approached an exit, that inner voice came clear again: ‘Brake.’ I felt it, but I didn’t. Maybe doubt, maybe momentum—I just kept going. Next thing I knew, the car slid and hit the guardrail. It wasn’t a bad wreck, thank God, but it shook me. The car stopped, I was okay, but the message was loud: that voice was protecting me from worse. I had the chance to avoid it entirely, and I didn’t listen. But even in the miss, grace was there—no one hurt, just a lesson.

Reflection & Core Message
These aren’t dramatic disasters. They’re everyday moments where the Higher Source spoke, I overrode, and life showed me the cost. But here’s the beautiful part: each miss built trust. The more I ignored and saw what happened, the quicker I started paying attention. Now, after years of reflection—Vietnam, delivering mail, retirement, all of it—I see the higher hand was guiding the whole time. Not forcing, but gently steering. The inner voice is constant contact, not occasional. It protects, provides, corrects with love. And the best part? You don’t have to wait until you’re older to see it. Start listening today. Pause when you feel that nudge. Ask, ‘Is this the voice?’ Then follow. The peace and protection that come are worth it.

If this resonates with you—if you’ve ever felt that quiet pull and wondered whether to trust it—try it this week. Next time a nudge comes, pause, listen, and follow. See what happens. And if you know someone who could use a gentle reminder about listening to their inner voice, go ahead and Share this article with them. Thanks for being here with me today. Keep trusting that guidance—it’s always with you. Peace and protection to you all. See you in the next one.
